Markus was born and raised in Meckenheim, Germany and undertook his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the RWTH Aachen University. He also did a research internship in the group of Prof. Rylan Lundgren at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Markus joined the Schoenebeck group for his Master Thesis project in which he focused on the cross-coupling of germanium compounds, before starting his PhD in 2021.
